What’s this project about?
As with much of India, Delhi is a city of extremes. From the super-rich to the very poor, the difference is stark. This project aims to help some of those children from poor or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Often, while their parents are out earning money, children have nothing to do but roam the streets, which exposes them to exploitation and risk.
On this programme, you would be volunteering with a charity that is dedicated to helping to improve the lives of these children. With centres across Delhi, you can help to provide games and educational activities for the children so they can learn and develop greater confidence. This is a thoroughly rewarding and worthwhile way to spend your time in India.
Typical day
After breakfast you will head to the centre for the day. The centre is no more than 30 minutes from the volunteer accommodation, and you will travel with staff on your first day. Volunteering starts at 10am Monday-Friday and ends at 4pm. You will have a break typically anytime between 12.30 and 2.30pm. You will be responsible for your own lunch but there are plenty of places close to the centres where you can enjoy local food. Dinner is then served at the accommodation at 6pm.
Why should I do this?
If you have experience of working with children and want a volunteer trip that is meaningful and worthwhile, volunteering with street children in Delhi is perfect. The children are full of energy and enthusiasm and are a lot of fun to be around. Help from volunteers is very much appreciated by the dedicated team at each of the centres.
You will be living in a safe area of South Delhi, in a shared apartment, which makes this programme social. You will have access to lots of restaurants and night markets. There is so much to do in Delhi that you will have plenty to see and do in the evening and weekends. From the famous Red Fort to the Lotus Temple, Delhi is brimming with history and culture. There are also amazing trips you can organise during your weekends, including a trip to the iconic Taj Mahal.
Language and cultural week
We provide an optional language and cultural week in Delhi before you begin your volunteering for an additional 543 euro. This provides the opportunity to relax, get over your travels and learn lots about your new home. You will learn some basic Hindi, see the sights of Delhi and travel to Agra, home of the iconic Taj Mahal.
