The project

Africa’s rhinos are facing a poaching crisis. The calves left behind experience high levels of stress, are too young to fend for themselves, and are left vulnerable to attacks from predators.

By joining this project, you will help provide essential care to orphaned and injured rhinos, making a real difference to their health and well-being, and preparing them for adult life. Golola has an excellent track record at releasing their rehabilitated rhinos, giving orphans a miraculous second chance at life.

What to expect?

Supported by passionate and highly qualified rhino specialists, you’ll become fully immersed in the world of rhino care in a calm and intimate small-team setting. Start your day packing feedbags and delivering food to the older rhinos who no longer drink milk, before helping to freshen up their living areas. If there are babies at the centre during your stay, you could also assist with preparing a specially-made milk formula and bottle feeding!

As a volunteer, you’ll also accompany staff to monitor older, successfully released rhinos. In a stunning, protected reserve which is also home to zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and more, you’ll observe how rehabilitated orphans are adapting to their new environment.

If you are searching for the chance to help orphaned rhinos and make a real difference to long-term rhino conservation, this is the project for you.

“We learned so much during our stay. Working alongside such dedicated staff and being so close to the rhinos really reinforced my connection to nature. It was one of the most magical experiences of my life.”

As a volunteer, you’ll receive:

  • Access to 24/7 support from our in-country team
  • All of your in-country transport and accommodation
  • A personal consultation with our conservation team to answer any questions

Die Freiwilligen-Organisation stellt sich vor

Since 1999, our organisation has empowered gap year travellers to work hands-on with Africa’s wildlife. As experts in conservation, we’ve helped thousands of volunteers gain skills for their university applications or future careers, all while creating gap year experiences that are anything but tame.

We’ve also supported those that are simply searching for a meaningful wildlife experience instead of the usual safari holiday. We do this by offering a variety of opportunities including being able to volunteer at wildlife care and rehabilitation centres to aid orphaned and injured animals; assist with wildlife conservation management in order to monitor priority species and contribute to vital research; and being able to live the life of an African wildlife vet while meeting the requirements for Extra Mural Studies (EMS) and Animal Husbandry Extra Mural Studies (AHEMS).

Together, we can create a brighter future for Africa’s wildlife.
