Projekt und Rolle der Freiwilligen

Program Description:

Located 20 km from Cape Town, the foundation relies on the commitment of interns to carry out its mission. Participants actively take part in caring for seabirds as well as in related tasks such as marketing and fundraising. This internship allows you to validate your academic year while contributing to wildlife conservation.

Orientation Days:

The internship begins with a two-day orientation that includes:

  • Airport pickup and hotel check-in.
  • Introduction to the area and the program.
  • Guided tour of Cape Town, including landmarks such as the Castle of Good Hope and the District Six Museum.
  • Optional visits to the Waterfront or a hike up Table Mountain.

Intern Responsibilities:

Volunteers take part in several essential tasks:

  • Maintaining the hygiene and cleanliness of the center.
  • Cleaning enclosures, equipment, and laundry.
  • Preparing and distributing food to the birds.
  • Capturing, hydrating, and administering medication to birds.
  • Maintaining the center and preparing for animal releases.

Example Schedule:

Interns work up to 5 days per week, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with breaks. On certain days, working hours may extend until 6:30 p.m., depending on the center’s needs.

Daily Activities:

  • Food Preparation: defrosting fish and preparing fluids.
  • Laundry: washing and drying towels and linens.
  • Cleaning Station: using high-pressure hoses.
  • Aviary: cleaning, feeding, and caring for flying birds.
  • Intensive Care Unit: assisting with treatments and cleaning.
  • Rehabilitation Enclosures: caring for African penguins, feeding, and administering medication.
  • Origin Enclosure: maintaining the exhibition area and preparing food.
  • General Tasks: overall maintenance of the center.

Commitment Required:

Working with wild birds requires patience and dedication. These animals can sometimes behave aggressively, but with practice, volunteers quickly gain the skills needed to handle and feed them safely.
