Wildlife Conservation in the Greater Kruger National Park

Einsatzort: Südafrika, Afrika
Aktions-Bereich: Natur-und Umweltschutz
Help protect Africa’s largest and most important population of rhinos in the Greater Kruger National Park! Guided by an anti-poaching specialist, you’ll monitor rhino movement, help maintain camera traps, and learn to read the bush like an expert tracker. Your support contributes to the long-term protection of rhinos and other wildlife in this extraordinary ecosystem.

Projekt und Rolle der Freiwilligen

The project

Volunteer in a private part of the Greater Kruger, one of the most important conservation areas in the whole of Africa. This vast ecosystem is home to some of the continent’s most endangered wildlife, including African wild dogs, hooded vultures, black rhinos, and the world’s largest population of white rhinos - a species under constant pressure from poaching. This project takes you into the heart of the bush to assist with wildlife tracking and monitoring, and connect with nature in a new and meaningful way.

What to expect?

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be contributing to real conservation efforts. You might find yourself tracking a rhino on foot, recording its GPS location, and sending ID photos to the reserve’s anti-poaching team. You’ll also learn how to track and monitor other threatened species, including cheetahs, leopards, and wild dogs! All of the data you collect feeds directly into the reserve’s long-term wildlife management strategy and plays a meaningful role in helping protect these important wildlife species.

Beyond the reserve, you’ll also get the chance to explore the region’s outstanding natural beauty - from visiting one of South Africa’s largest wildlife rehabilitation centres to cruising down the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world.

Guided by conservation experts, this project offers a rare opportunity to understand the day-to-day realities of protecting wildlife in South Africa. You’ll gain firsthand experience of the challenges faced by conservationists in South Africa, and discover how you can make a real difference.

After days spent tracking wildlife and exploring the local area, you’ll return to your base camp, tucked away in a private area of the Greater Kruger, to unwind and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

As a volunteer, you’ll receive:

  • Access to 24/7 support from our in-country team
  • All of your in-country transport, accommodation, and food
  • A personal consultation with our conservation team to answer any questions

Die Freiwilligen-Organisation stellt sich vor

Since 1999, our organisation has empowered gap year travellers to work hands-on with Africa’s wildlife. As experts in conservation, we’ve helped thousands of volunteers gain skills for their university applications or future careers, all while creating gap year experiences that are anything but tame.

We’ve also supported those that are simply searching for a meaningful wildlife experience instead of the usual safari holiday. We do this by offering a variety of opportunities including being able to volunteer at wildlife care and rehabilitation centres to aid orphaned and injured animals; assist with wildlife conservation management in order to monitor priority species and contribute to vital research; and being able to live the life of an African wildlife vet while meeting the requirements for Extra Mural Studies (EMS) and Animal Husbandry Extra Mural Studies (AHEMS).

Together, we can create a brighter future for Africa’s wildlife.
