Join a dedicated conservation team on a private game reserve in South Africa and experience daily life protecting wildlife.
This project gives you hands-on insight into conservation work while living among incredible animals like elephants, rhinos, zebras, and giraffes.
You’ll work alongside experienced rangers, contributing to the upkeep and preservation of the natural habitat.
What is this project about?
The reserve is home to a variety of native species and plays a crucial role in conserving South Africa’s ecosystems.
Your work supports sustainable land and wildlife management, helping the reserve remain a safe haven for its animal residents.
The focus is on practical, land-based conservation and monitoring, not animal handling.
What will I be doing?
Your days are varied and depend on the needs of the reserve. You’ll work in a small group alongside trained staff.
Tasks include:
Monitoring wildlife movements and behaviours
Recording sightings and tracking animals across the reserve
Removing alien plant species that threaten native biodiversity
Repairing and maintaining fences, roads, and waterholes
Helping with bush clearing and erosion control
Learning about anti-poaching measures and reserve sustainability
There is no contact with dangerous wildlife. This project is focused on observing, protecting, and supporting natural systems from a safe distance. You’ll explore the full extent of the reserve, often travelling in 4x4s with experienced rangers.
Why choose this project?
You’ll contribute meaningfully to real conservation work in an active game reserve
You’ll develop a deep understanding of wildlife tracking, reserve management, and ecological balance
You’ll live in the bush and experience South Africa’s wild beauty up close
You’ll form part of a small, close-knit team working toward a common goal
You’ll return home with a sense of purpose, conservation knowledge, and unforgettable memories
This project offers an authentic, educational, and impactful way to volunteer with wildlife—without staged interactions or artificial enclosures.
