Join us in Mozambique for our 5-week marine conservation program designed to help you gain useful skills while contributing to meaningful, long-term conservation. This is ideal for individuals passionate about the ocean conservation, and community work. If you don’t have 5 weeks, you might want to consider our other projects on Wegweiser Freiwilligenarbeit that last 2 weeks (Research Expedition) or 10 days (Whale Citizen Science Expedition).
As part of our team, you’ll assist with scientifically sound research and community projects that directly inform conservation action and policy. Your work will contribute to long-term datasets used for peer-reviewed publications and Marine Protected Area planning. This program can become your mandatory university internship for sciences and humanitarian internships and you can use this program for university credits.
You’ll experience:
• Coral reef surveys while scuba diving
• Whales, rays, sharks & dolphin monitoring
• Fisheries research
• Aerial and drone-based surveys
• Ocean trash monitoring and data logging
• Teaching and painting at local schools
• Assist in teaching swimming to children
Your first week focuses on training and orientation, with lectures and practical sessions led by qualified marine biologists. You’ll learn our research methods, how science links to community livelihoods, and why our conservation plan is important. On weekends, you’ll have time to enjoy the Mozambican coast through optional surf lessons, diving, boat trips, or relaxing on the beach. On Saturday afternoons we teach children to swim, one of our most impactful community programs.
Accommodation is simple, shared (max 2 per room), close to the beach, and fully catered. You need spending money for snacks and mobile data. This is a remote field station, so flexibility and adaptability are part of the adventure. You can add 1 week of safari in South Africa to understand more about terrestrial ecology and conservation in Africa. This is why there is a price range.
What you gain: A professional skill set, a performance review and reference, access to our Alumni Job Network, and pathways into internships and seasonal roles with us and partner organisations.
This is more than volunteering. It’s a launchpad into marine conservation.
