“Surf & Volunteer” Ecuador - Marine Environment Protection

Plastic pollution in the oceans is a massive global problem. Around 80% of all waste originates from land, with the majority being plastic. This leads to severe effects on nature as plastic particles enter the food chain. Countless marine mammals, turtles, whales, and millions of seabirds die in agony.

The project’s goal is to care for weakened and injured animals to later release them back into the wild. Local communities must be better educated about the problems and dangers of plastic to build a bridge between society and nature. The project creates an inspiring environment where people can learn, interact directly with water, and discover what each person can do to protect the ocean.

In the morning, you participate in the project. In the afternoon, you learn surfing tips and tricks from South American professionals. In the evening, you gather around the camp barbecue with fellow surfers. Later, head to the beach campfire, where you can marvel at the shifting colors of unique sunsets—right above the ocean on the equator in Ecuador!

You’ll work with the volunteer team and the support of Ecuador’s Ministry of Environment in the following areas:

• Monitoring turtle breeding sites and overseeing nests during egg-laying periods
• Rescuing and providing first aid to injured marine life
• Creating educational materials to raise awareness about local flora and fauna
• Building and installing wooden boxes (hatching cages) to protect baby turtles
• Feeding and caring for animals in the local sanctuary
• Assisting in workshops for children and adults on environmental protection and nature conservation
• Beach cleanups and organizing community events focused on environmental protection—e.g., building and installing informational signage, setting up plastic collection bins
• Collaborating with the Ministry of Environment to protect animals and ecosystems
