The project is making a difference by providing volunteers with a high level of English to help build the confidence of local students learning English at school. Many of the children come from low income backgrounds and so by offering the opportunity to improve and build their confidence in English, the project aims to break the poverty cycle by increasing employment opportunities for children in the area.
Despite the areas close proximity to the popular tourist destinations of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao, communities in this area don’t usually have exposure to native English speakers. Because of this additional English lessons from native speakers are extremely valued.
English is the primary language in the tourist industry in Thailand and in the Surat Thani Province and so tourism is a major source of jobs and income. English lessons from international volunteer are extremely valued, particularly by young people who can see the benefit this will have on their career prospects.
Volunteer lessons are additional to the curriculum and do not replace the work of local teachers. Volunteers are able to make these English lessons fun and interactive and help students to get a better grasp on conversational English.
