Bird monitoring conservation project in Greece

Einsatzort: Griechenland, Europa
Aktions-Bereich: Tierpflege & Veterinärprojekte, Natur-und Umweltschutz
The goal of our field volunteer program is to contribute to sustainable development in the area of the Inner Ionian island archipelago in Greece. For this activity, volunteers monitor the bird diversity and behavior for a variety of coastal ecosystems principally in the island of Kalamos, using direct observations, sound recorders and passive acoustic monitoring devices.

Projekt und Rolle der Freiwilligen

The ecosystems of our area both on sea and land are under constant and geometrically increasing threat. We aim to conserve them through scientific work, community engagement and direct on the ground actions.

Here are a few things about our Bird Monitoring & Conservation Program:
- Volunteers participate in collecting bird behavior and general soundscape data from a variety of highly threatened habitats with the goal of contributing to the data driven conservation efforts of our organisation.
- The work consists of direct visit to these habitats (forest, scrub, agricultural land and others), which are primarily on the island of Kalamos, to record with direct observation the presence of individual birds species and the acoustic ecology of the environment in general.
- Field work for data collection but also data curation and analysis are potential tasks for this activity.

In addition to this volunteer project, we currently have three other pre-arranged activities. Feel free to contact us for more information on:

1.Building the Kalamos Island Eco-community and experimental organic fruit and vegetable farm

2.Feral cat monitoring program for Kalamos ,Kastos and their satellite islands

3.Marine ecosystem monitoring program

Volunteer selection process

We operate on a non discriminatory policy basis. People of all ages 18 or above can potentially join the program provided they can show the relative commitment and ethos. We try our best to fit what we do to the individual volunteer. We don’t separate people based on gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation or religious belief.

Commitment to our cause is an essential characteristic of any volunteer. For us the ideal volunteer is a person that can turn a problem into a success.

We have a two stage application process whereby following the first stage of the application process of sending the form ,a second stage follows where a live interview is held via skype, telephone or in person.

Die Freiwilligen-Organisation stellt sich vor

We are a not for profit non governmental grassroots organisation registered as a not for profit company and based in Greece composed of a dedicated group of people driven by our desire to protect the environment through specific courses of action such as environmental conservation projects and scientific research targeted towards sustainable development. Key to this object is the achievement of environmental justice in a given area and the conservation of biological diversity. Our organisation is governed by a board of directors.A voluntary international advisory board provides advice on various issues . Our organisation is operated primarily by volunteers and a smaller number of members of the organisation. We achieve our goals by providing solutions to local environmental problems through targeted conservation actions, empowerment and education of local communities to protect their environment, relevant legal actions and the provision of viable sustainable economic alternatives to human practices that are environmentally destructive . The logo of our organisation is a symbolic representation of the focus of the organisation in conserving and restoring organisms and ecosystems that support them that are either relatively large in size, great in age for their species or both and specifically large sized individuals particularly within each of three ecological groups highly threatened by human interference : Cetaceans, terrestrial herbivores and large sized and/or aged floral organisms
So wählen wir die Organisationen auf unserem Portal aus.
