Volunteers assist with the day to day running of the school kindergarten by organising educational activities and working with small groups of children to help them improve their individual skills. Activities that volunteers may be involved in include:
- Educational early learning lessons including phonics and numbers
- English activities and games
- Dance and group activities
- Maths lessons
- Supervising and interacting during play time
- Organising music and art activities
Baby weighing clinics take place 3 times a month and are held in surrounding villages and are attended by mothers with children who are 0-5 years old.
The team run hand washing and sanitation projects in 10 communities in Ghana. They have taught the importance of good hygiene to over 3,000 children and this also had a positive impact on the local community since now 90% of the parents of those children taught understand the importance of germs and hand washing.
Why volunteers are needed:
The kindergarten has limited staff and resources so volunteers are able to help support the local staff and provide focused education assistance to the children.
Although English is the national language of Ghana, the level of English in this area is low since many children speak local tribal languages. All Primary and Secondary school subjects in Ghana are taught in English, so a good understanding of the language is vital for furthering their education. By interacting with the young children in English volunteers are directly improving the children’s prospects.
We are an award winning non-profit organisation arranging ethical, inspiring and supported volunteering opportunities around the world since 2001. Volunteers are needed from 1- 12 weeks for animal, conservation, child care, education, teaching, building and community volunteering projects around the world.
In this time of uncertainty during the current Coronavirus outbreak, we are monitoring the global situation closely in conjunction with the UK FCDO and our local teams on the ground. Some of our countries are now open again for travel, our destinations are opening up in different stages and with different travel requirements. We are following this closely and taking bookings accordingly. As for so many people, our projects have had a very challenging time and are in great need of volunteer support!
We want to reassure volunteers that you can feel confident booking an overseas volunteering placement with us and we have introduced extra flexibility to help with this.
Flexible payment terms
We are giving added flexibility on payments. Normally we ask for final payment by 8 weeks before start date, but we are reducing this to 1 month before start date for placements with start dates in 2021 and in the first half of 2022. We will only ever ask for your final payment if we are confident your trip will go ahead.
Flexible date changes
If any of our volunteers want or need to reschedule (regardless of whether it is related to Coronavirus or not!), we are happy to reschedule for up to 18 months. You just need to let us know 1 month or more before your placement date and it can be open ended if you aren’t sure when you want to reschedule to. We are keeping this free of charge for maximum flexibility!
Booking flights – wait for now
We normally recommend that volunteers book flights as soon as possible after their placement is confirmed to secure the best deals, but with the current uncertainty, it’s best to wait until travel restrictions are lifted and the airlines can confirm their schedules before booking flights and making other arrangements.
We’d love to help organise your next volunteer adventure, ready for when the time is right for your trip!
