The project
Over generations, the rainforest in Borneo has slowly been destroyed, replaced with endless palm oil plantations. This deforestation has dramatically risked the habitat for animals such as orangutans, pygmy elephants and gibbons. This has meant that all of these species are now under serious threat.
This project aims to conserve the dwindling orangutan and pygmy elephant populations in the wild, helping to replant their jungle and monitor them in their natural habitat. This is a real opportunity to see incredible wildlife and live in a small remnant of paradise – and help to keep it that way. We have seen so many successes in the past few years, so why not join us and help to achieve more?
What will volunteers be doing?
Volunteers live in a small local community, helping the locals to preserve the rain forest around them - with the ultimate aim of preserving the animals within it. Highlights of this project include:
- Seeing orangutans and other rare animals in the wild
- Getting stuck in to manual labour to help replant the rain forest
- Meet local people and immerse yourself in their traditional lifestyle
- Eat delicious home-cooked food with local families
- Relax in a stunning setting next to the Kinabatangan River
- Visit an orangutan rehabilitation centre and sun bear rehabilitation centre
Accommodation and food
Live in a lovely guest house next to the Kinabatangan River. You will be sharing a bedroom and bathroom with one other person.
Food is provided by the local community in their homes. It is one of the definite highlights of your trip, as the food is amazing!
Free time
You will have your evenings free, and on one day you will enjoy a trip to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre.
